On the basis of various staining techniques the cytoplasmic vesicles were classified as primary lysosomes, secondary lysosomes and mucopolysaccharide-rich inclusions. Both in the present study on human tissue and the organ culture investigation conducted by Rohen et al. (1975) lysosomal complexes were prominent in the cultured cell cytoplasm. Although cultured meshwork cells do not resemble "normal" trabecular meshwork cells they are remarkably similar to "activated" trabecular meshwork cells. Trabecular meshwork cells become activated in vivo into either fibroblastlike cells or macrophagic cells in response to various insults imposed on the outflow tissues.
