At one time, the Tunnel Tree, carved out of a Giant Sequoia, was located in the Mariposa Grove of Yosemite National Park. This tree fell in 1969 due to heavy snow. Fort Humboldt State Historic Park Location: Along Highland Avenue, which intersects US Highway 101 on the south side of Eureka. To early settlers of this region, Fort Humboldt was the sole means of staying in touch with the rest of the world.

The chapel was completely destroyed by fire in 1970, but has since been rebuilt. A noted attraction is the commandants house, built by poet, writer, and traveler Alexander Rotchev. His wife, the popular Princess Helena Gagarin, gave up her financial inheritance and her place in Russian society when she married Rotchev.
